About the Company

Our client is a growing importer and distributor of recreational sporting goods, supplying retailers nationwide with high-quality, innovative products. As a small but dynamic business, we are looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to oversee our financial operations and work closely with the President to drive strategic growth. This is a replacement role for the retiring CFO with a direct path to grow into the CFO position.

Position Summary

The Controller will be responsible for managing the company’s day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and cash flow management. This role is ideal for a proactive and adaptable professional who thrives in a small business environment and can wear multiple hats. You’ll serve as the financial backbone of the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and clarity in all fiscal matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, inventory costing, and payroll.
  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee cash flow forecasting and management to ensure liquidity and support operational needs.
  • Collaborate with the owner on budgeting, financial planning, and performance analysis.
  • Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and relevant tax regulations.
  • Coordinate with external CPA for tax preparation and financial audits.
  • Oversee inventory accounting and assist with product margin analysis.
  • Oversee sales tax compliance.
  • Provide financial insights and reports to support purchasing, pricing, and business growth decisions.
  • Streamline and improve financial systems, processes, and reporting tools as needed.
  • Supervise accounting staff (team of 4).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, CMA or MBA a plus).
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including significant experience dealing with inventory.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, inventory accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with Epicore ERP a plus.
  • Experience with small business operations and comfort in a hands-on role.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines proactively.
  • Collaborative approach to business.
  • People leader who guides but doesn’t micromanage staff.
