We are working with a reputable, growing, midsized construction company headquartered in St. Louis to find a Payroll Manager. Reporting to the CFO, the Payroll Manager will manage a Payroll Specialist and have responsibility for company-wide payroll administration, reporting, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have 5 years’ in-house payroll processing experience for a company with hundreds of employees in multiple states, strong payroll tax knowledge, experience with payroll processing systems (such as ADP), and work well under pressure. Construction industry and union payroll experience are highly preferred.


  • Oversee company-wide payroll processing and reporting.
  • Supervise payroll personnel to ensure compliance, process improvements and maximization of productivity.
  • Gather information on hours worked, hourly rates, wages, new hire information; assist personnel in data entry as needed to meet timely processing.
  • Maintain accurate payroll information, files, and records in both written and electronic formats to provide up-to-date reference and audit trail for compliance.
  • Oversee and administer employee benefits such as 401k and Health Savings Account payments.
  • Responsible for the regular preparation of relevant management reports, including weekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Responsible for preparing and remitting union and non-union reports, new hire reporting, timely payroll, payroll taxes and garnishments.
  • Serve as the payroll expert within and outside of the payroll department.
  • Prepare all appropriate general ledger entries and monthly reconciliations.
  • Ad-hoc reporting and data gathering.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business or Finance or 5+ years of hands-on, in-house payroll processing and leadership experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience in union payroll processing; preferably in a construction-related industry. Will consider strong candidates with as little as 3 years’ experience if it is within the construction industry with union employees.
  • Working knowledge of payroll systems such as ADP.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Excel) and ViewPoint.
  • Ability to learn new computer software programs.
  • Process improvement mindset.
  • Meticulous worker that pays attention to detail.
