Tax Manager
Build Your Career. Build Your Network. Build a Life Outside of Work.
If you’re an experienced tax professional who wants more than the traditional public accounting grind, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
Our client is an established, highly respected public accounting firm providing tax, audit, outsourced accounting, and advisory services to a diverse base of closely held businesses, individuals, and high-net-worth clients.
They have built a culture around doing excellent work without expecting their people to live at the office. The Tax Manager in this role can expect to work approximately 75% of the hours typically required in comparable positions at other public accounting firms.
That means you can continue to build an exceptional career while having significantly more time for your family, your community, and the things that matter outside of work.
And this isn’t a role designed to keep you at the Manager level. The firm is looking for someone who wants to build relationships, develop a network, grow a book of business, and ultimately earn a path to Partner.
Why This Opportunity Stands Out
A better work/life balance.
Enjoy a workload that is intentionally designed to be substantially lighter than what you would typically experience at a comparable public accounting firm.
A genuine path to Partner.
The firm wants its Tax Managers to become future leaders. You’ll be encouraged and supported in developing your own network, cultivating client relationships, generating business, and building the foundation for future partnership.
Business development without the “eat what you kill” mentality.
You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in the business community, attend events, develop relationships, and identify opportunities—but you’ll have the support of an established firm and a strong platform behind you.
A collaborative culture.
Work alongside experienced professionals across tax, audit, outsourced accounting, and advisory services. You’ll have the opportunity to provide clients with broader solutions rather than operating in a tax silo.
Meaningful client relationships.
Work directly with business owners, executives, individuals, and other decision-makers. You’ll have the opportunity to become a true trusted advisor rather than simply preparing tax returns.
The Opportunity
As Tax Manager, you will lead tax engagements, provide strategic tax planning and advice, oversee complex compliance work, and serve as a mentor and resource to the tax team.
You’ll also play an important role in the continued growth of the firm—developing relationships in the community, participating in prospective client meetings, identifying opportunities within existing accounts, and beginning to establish your own book of business.
What You’ll Do
-
Oversee the preparation and review of individual, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns.
-
Manage tax engagements from planning through completion, ensuring quality, accuracy, and timely delivery.
-
Serve as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for clients on tax matters.
-
Develop tax planning strategies that align with clients’ financial and business objectives.
-
Stay current on changes in tax laws and regulations and proactively identify opportunities for clients.
-
Develop a deep understanding of clients’ businesses, financial situations, and long-term objectives.
-
Lead, coach, and mentor tax associates and senior professionals.
-
Assign and review work, monitor engagement progress, and help team members develop professionally.
-
Collaborate with professionals across audit, outsourced accounting, and advisory services to deliver comprehensive solutions.
-
Participate in networking events, community organizations, prospective client meetings, and other business development activities.
-
Develop and strengthen relationships with business owners and other professional contacts.
-
Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and introduce additional firm services.
-
Begin building and developing your own book of business as part of a long-term path toward Partner.
What We’re Looking For
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
-
Active CPA license.
-
5+ years of progressive public accounting experience required; 7-12 preferred.
-
Strong technical knowledge of individual, corporate, partnership, and trust taxation.
-
Demonstrated ability to independently manage client relationships and lead tax engagements.
-
Experience supervising, coaching, and developing accounting professionals.
-
Strong business judgment and the ability to translate complex tax issues into practical advice for clients.
-
Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and project management skills.
-
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with professional tax preparation/practice management software.
-
A genuine interest in building relationships, becoming involved in the community, and developing new business.
-
Entrepreneurial mindset and the ambition to grow into a future Partner.
The Ideal Candidate
This role is particularly well suited for a Senior Tax Manager or experienced Tax Manager who enjoys public accounting but is tired of the hours and lifestyle associated with traditional firms.
You may be ready for a change if you’re looking for:
-
A significantly more manageable workload without stepping away from challenging client work.
-
Greater autonomy and ownership of client relationships.
-
A firm where your contributions and business development efforts can directly influence your career trajectory.
-
An opportunity to become a Partner rather than remaining on the perpetual Manager/Director track.
-
A culture where people know each other, support one another, and enjoy coming to work.
-
More time to invest in your family, community, professional network, and life outside the office.
The Bottom Line
You shouldn’t have to choose between a great career and a great life.
This is an opportunity to join a successful public accounting firm where you can do sophisticated tax work, build meaningful client relationships, develop your own network and book of business, and work toward Partnership—all while working approximately 75% of the hours typically expected at other public accounting firms.
If you’re an accomplished tax professional who wants to build something rather than simply work harder, we’d like to talk with you.
